Toronto’s very talented hispanic-Canadian singer Jessie Reyez drops the first official video off of her debut project Kiddo. The visuals paint a very dark picture of a delicate topic. The video kicks off with a very short monologue from Jessie saying she always dreamt to be a singer as a kid. It then cuts to a shot with a homemade video effect with a little girl who starts singing the record with Jessie’s voice laid over it.
The rest of the video appears to be a setting in which someone is introducing Reyez to a record executive or producer, which represent the “Gatekeepers” which Jessie refers to. The chorus sings “20 million dollars in a car, girl tie your hair up if you wanna be a star. 30 million people wanna shot, how much would it take for you to spread those legs apart.”. This is perfectly depicted when they hop in the car and the guy at the back attempts to force himself onto Jessie and gets angry when she doesn’t go with it.
