It’s that time of they year again, for the 35th year, Canadian Music Week is back! The 1-week festival will start on April 18 and go through to April 23. There are many talented acts from Canada and beyond and although the acts spread far beyond the hip-hop and R&B genre this guide is just for the followers of Toronto’s hip-hop/R&B scene. A lot of interesting local acts take the stage this year and some T.O. rappers are getting the opportunity to open for some major artists.
Before we get into the list of events featuring Toronto hip-hop/R&B acts here’s a few things that might make your CMW experience a little easier:
- As stated in Canadian Music Week’s FAQ most events have a late last call and their are a few all ages events for the minors.
- The headquarters for the festival this year and where you can pick up tickets or wristbands is The Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel
- Although it’s Canadian Music Week, there are comedy events film events, conferences and more
- Here’s a link to a free parking map in case you go through the headache of driving in downtown Toronto
- Here’s the official CMW website for any other questions you made need answered
Now, there’s about 8 events featuring local rappers or R&B artists. This 8-event guide of CMW 2017 for supporters of Toronto’s hip-hop and R&B is essential if you want to filter out events that don’t include rappers or singers from our city. Here’s where you might find the Made in Toronto team and some of your favourite local artists this week:

Xavier Omar is a soulful R&B artist from San Antonio who’s been showing a lot of growth over the years. His hit song Blind Man, which was produced by Bryson Tiller collaborator J-Louis caught a lot of attention and has gotten millions of spins on various platforms. After a name change from SPZRKT to Xavier Omar, the song became the single of his project–The Everlasting Wave.
Alongside Xavier Omar there will be 3 special guest and 2 of them have frequently been featured on the Made in Toronto blog: TOBi and Ebhoni. Both are talented singers and have been given the opportunity to share the stage with a talented singer from across the border, but in our hometown!
Address: 722 College St
Time: 8:00 PM
After releasing her self-titled EP in 2016 and getting a lot of good looks for it, Toronto singer Charlotte Day Wilson went on tour. As a part of her tour she will be performing 2 back to back shows at The Mod Club Theatre and then heading to Montreal.
Although she has not released any new music in 2017 so far (probably because she’s been booking shows left, right and centre) Charlotte has released the video for her soulful single Work. If you wanted to attend any of her headlining shows in Toronto you’re out of luck, as both of them are sold out! Don’t worry though she’ll be back in Guelph, Ontario for the Hillside Festival in July.

The Canadian Music Week showcase at Revival is definitely one you should consider attending if you like discovering new raw talent. This event is made up of about 6 acts and all of them are Canadian rappers. Haviah Mighty and A-Game are 2 of the acts who are most known from the GTA on this list. Haviah Mighty has been on the come up and getting very known locally for her bars and energy on her latest project Flower City. Noyz is another rapper like Haviah who’s been on the come up in Brampton. Noyz was on a cypher hosted by 40 0Z Heroes alongside Brampton rising stars Derin Falana and Pryde. The other few acts are all from different parts of Canada, so expect to see some real raw Canadian rap acts here.

A-Boogie is doing an All Ages and 19+ in Toronto for Canadian Music Week and the most exciting part about it is that 2 of our own rising rappers will open up for him: Derek Wise and Puffy L’z. Both Derek and Puffy have been making power moves. XO rapper Derek Wise dropped his debut project INGLORIOUS this year and Puffy L’z dropped his banger RiRi, which has been getting some serious spins so far (about half a million in a month).
The 2 dope Toronto rappers share the stage with one of New York’s most popping new Emcees. Not only will you want to attend this event to jam out to some A-Boogie, but to witness history as New York meets Toronto at The Danforth Music Hall.

Brampton’s talented rapper/singer K.Forest takes the stage at a collaborative event by The Hustle and Canadian Music Week on April 22. Also performing is Toronto’s Yoko Gold, Liza and New York’s Tangina Stone. All 3 artists on this list from the GTA have had an active 2017 and continue to build on that momentum. K. Forest not only headlined his first show, but he also recently dropped off 2 new records–On Deck and Low Low.
Liza and Yoko Gold have also been active this year. Liza dropped her debut EP February 29 and Yoko has been on tour opening for Tory Lanez. This event is definitely not one you want to miss!

Complex Canada is bringing Earl Sweatshirt to Toronto this week and Tasha The Amazon will be the opening act! After opening for YG’s tour last year Tasha is about to be able to add an opener for another major artist on her resume soon. Tasha was nominated in the same category as Drake, Tory Lanez and Jazz Cartier last month for the Juno’s for her project Die Every Day, which dropped towards the end of 2016. Now, 2017 is here and Tasha The Amazon continues to make big moves.
It’s going to be a busy week in Toronto for all music lovers, curators, and artists. The 8 events listed above are not even half of what’s going on this week in the city. Toronto’s hip-hop and R&B scene will shine this week along with the rest of Canada’s music scene. We hope to see all the supporters of our blog and many supporters of our music scene out here really supporting this week!
