20 Hip-Hop/R&B Artists From Toronto/GTA With Projects On The Way!

2016 was an amazing year for Toronto’s hip-hop and R&B scene. Artists got international exposure, record deals, many new local stars and up and comers made an impression on our scene, but the ball is still rolling. 2017 has started off just as actively as 2016 ended. We’re not even a month into the year and music videos are out, singles have released, tour’s are starting, projects dropped and projects have been announced. From the end of 2016 until now various artists have announced that projects are on the way.

Here are 20 artists from our music scene that already announced they are releasing projects in 2017:

  1. Clairmont The Second – Quest For Milk & Honey (BLACK EDITION)

He’s only 18 years old, but he’s been building a buzz. He raps, produces and has already released multiple projects. In July 2016 he dropped his album–Quest For Milk & Honey. Recently Clairmont The Second announced the Black Edition to QFMH is dropping days before he goes on tour with Vancouver rapper SonReal.

  1. JAHKOY – Forward Thinking 2

Jahkoy is a Toronto singer (who can also rap) whom is signed to Def Jam records and is based in L.A. Towards the end of 2016 he released his first EP under the label–Foreign Water. Now entering 2017 he takes to Twitter to announce the sequel to his debut mixtape Forward Thinking from 2014 will be releasing on Valentines Day.

Allan Rayman – RoadHouse 01

Allan Rayman kicked off the year with an early release Repeat featuring another Toronto singer on this list–Jessie Reyez. The talented Toronto-based artist is doing a special live performance for CBC this month and his project RoadHouse 01 is set to release on February 24.

  1. Yung Tory – Free Dope

Yung Tory hopped on to the Toronto Trap scene in 2016 as a new artist and quickly impressed. He continuously released music and videos. His buzz grew quite rapidly to the point Lil Durk remixed his banger Run It Up. Now the young rapper is in New Orleans performing at a festival headlined by Chief Keef.

  1. Jazz Cartier – Fleurever

Jazz Cartier really took his career to another level in 2016. His year was very active and he made quite an impression on the industry. It seems like 2017 will not be any less busy for the self-proclaimed prince of Toronto, as he already got released a song and it premiered on Zane Lowes Beats 1 radio show and is going on a European Tour in February. On the last month of last year he announced his next project is coming in 2017 and it’s titled Fleurever.

  1. Devontée – The Sun of Dawn

In October 2015 Devontee released his debut project District Vibe. Ever since then he’s been fairly consistent with the quality and amount of releases he’s made. Towards the end of 2016 the West end rapper featured on a track with CJ Fly of Pro Era. As 2017 rolls in Devontee announced his 2nd project is on the way–Sun Of Dawn–along with the hashtag Ayesha’s Homemade.

  1. Pressa – Press Machine

Pressa’s music in 2016 got him to the starting line of his rap career. Many of his songs became local hits and some even caught the eyes of rappers like Lil Bibby, Meek Mill, The Weeknd and Tory Lanez. In December of 2016 he released a song on Migos’ producer MurdaBeatz debut mixtape—Keep God First. The track is called Novacane and in January Pressa and MurdaBeatz dropped the official video for the banger. At the end of the video alongside the rappers social media handles was a promo for his mixtape Press Machine and the text “coming soon” under it.

  1. Raz Fresco – H.U.S.T.L.E.

Raz Fresco is a paradox in Toronto’s blossoming music scene as the best words to describe the Brampton MC is–a young vet. Raz has catalogue of music that is outstanding for an up and comer of his age. His last project release was Pablo Frescobar, which Wu-Tang’s Raekwon was on and he hasn’t released much music since then. This could only mean he’s been hard at work. As 2016 came to it’s end the young Toronto rap vet announced his next album is on the way. The title is a very clever acronym for HUSTLE–How U Survive The Life Everyday.

  1. Sean Leon – Black Sheep Nirvana

Sean Leon has been a factor in the Toronto music scene for years now. His organic growth has been a marvellous thing to witness. Sean has multiple projects under his belt, which the rapper describes as preludes to the project he’s been building anticipation for–Black Sheep Nirvana. Few know what’s going on with Leon’s album Black Sheep Nirvana thanks to his creatively unorthodox way of releasing content. Towards the end of 2016 the Parkdale rapper released a playlist titled LIFE WHEN YOU’RE THE MOVIE and listed three parts to the playlist in the description. Although we’re unsure what this means it seems like the three playlist projects might make up the Black Sheep Nirvana trilogy. At the release date of his film LIFE WHEN YOU’RE THE MOVIE, which got a whole lot of local attention Leon announced the first release date of the trilogy for I THINK YOU’VE GONE MAD. It drops on February 5th.

  1. Drake – More Life

It goes without saying that this is the most highly anticipated on this list. After the full OVO roster released projects last year including Drake the 6God announced he’d be releasing what he referred to as a “playlist project” in 2017. After releasing 3 new songs via his birthday show on OVO Sound Radio the project was announced and had the internet buzzing in a matter of minutes. Now 2017 has arrived and as it was supposed to drop in December 2016, but the release date got pushed back, it’s fair to expect it will drop in the first quarter of 2017.

In December with the release of his song Falls Down he announced the release got pushed back to 2016. Now the year has begun and Shaq has released a single titled Falls Down and it seems like it’s going to be a big year for the talented lyricist.

  1. Pryde – RUSSELL (& LOVERBOY)

Brampton’s multi-talented artist Pryde formerly known as D-Pryde is going through a transition in his music career and it’s looking like it’s for the better. Throughout 2016 he released a lot of music including two projects and multiple videos. He’s already kicked off 2017 with a new music video for his song Left Field. Pryde has also announced he will be releasing a new project in February. It seems like he’s picking up where he left off and it’s all a part of build up to his upcoming self-titled album–RUSSELL.

13. Derek Wise – INGLORIOUS

About 10 days before the release date, XO rapper Derek Wise took to social media to announce the release date, name and art cover of his debut album INGLORIOUS. A few days before announcing his album Derek released the video for his single Get It Myself. On the last day of the first month of 2017 Derek Wise is set to drop the album and we expect nothing less than flames!

  1. MYNIAKAL – Vanity Fair

If you haven’t heard of Toronto up and comer Myniakal you surely will this year. After catching up with the Toronto rapper and his produced GoldSoul at his dope performance for UNCRWNED, we were informed they have a project on the way. It’s been over a year in the making and it’s the product of a lot of trial and error–the best method of growth. The talented Toronto artists who now live in Vaughan assured us their project Vanity Fair is dropping in 2017.

  1. SYPH – TBA (On DC 4.5)

Mississauga’s talented rapper SYPH is a representative of Sauga’s grungier side. He proves this in his 2017 debut video Whole Lotta / Dirty Bird. The Sauga City rapper has been growing quite a buzz after picking up a Tory Lanez feature on his 2015 mixtape Rookie Of The Year, and after rumors of him being on Meek Mill’s DC 4.5 (which drops in 2017 as well). SYPH is expected to drop an EP sometime in 2017. The title has not been announced yet.

  1. Leila Dey – TBA

Leila Dey is a talented R&B singer on the come up who works with Sandbox Studios. In 2016 she did not release as much content as other artists from our city but her song Vibe featuring Hakeem was amazing. On her SoundCloud bio it says her 5-track EP is set to drop in mid-February, and she will apparently appear in a movie!

  1. Jessie Reyez – TBA

She’s an alumnus of Toronto’s known organization The Remix Project and made an impression on us all with her 2016 hit Figures. The video released shortly after the Zane Lowe Beats 1 world premiere. Now in 2017 she features on Allan Rayman’s new song Repeat. In an interview with Pigeons and Planes she hinted at a project being on the way.
