OVO Sound is Canada’s major urban label. The label’s recording artists consists of Drake, PartyNextDoor, Roy Woods, Majid Jordan, and DVSN. 2016 was an extremely active year for the OVO camp. Not only did they continue to grow an popularize OVO Sound Radio, they also all released projects. None of these projects were included on our 41 notable Toronto project picks of 2016 list so this article will remind you how active OVO was this year.
Majid Jordan – Majid Jordan
Majid Jordan was the first of the two OVO duo’s that got signed, and the first to release a project this year. The self-titled album was Majid Jordan’s first for-sale project and it’s simply amazing. The duo have an amazing chemistry and do a great job at blending sounds of Disco, and Edm with that of R&B and Soul. Seven music videos came out of this amazing project by OVO’s Majid Jordan, and each one of them is equally entertaining.
DVSN – Sept. 5th
The second duo signed to OVO Sound was the last act they signed. The very mysterious, and very talented DVSN. In 2015 DVSN shocked the world with only four songs on their SoundCloud, which all got a lot of attention. The sound DVSN delivers through their debut project is one reminiscent of classic R&B and Soul. The duo rapidly became local stars and are taking their career to the next level with their debut project Sept. 5th.
Drake – VIEWS
The leader and star of OVO Sound–Drake–also released his highly anticipated album VIEWS in 2016. The project had been building hype for quite some time now. With the world waiting the 6God didn’t fail to release a strong, and unique album. Drake really took his versatility to a whole new level with the release of VIEWS. He strengthened the dancehall-infused music wave with various hits on the album. He sold about 1.2 million in the first week and topped the charts for longer than that. The best thing about this record-breaking album is that the face of it is the face of our city, our famous CN Tower.
Roy Woods – Walking At Dawn (and Nocturnal)
“Roy outta here like NASA” sings the OVO founder on his song Hype off of his platinum album VIEWS. It might just be true. Not only did Roy follow-up to his debut Exis EP with his amazing EP Walking At Dawn, he followed up Walking At Dawn with a new EP titled Nocturnal. His first release of 2016 contained his hit single Gwan Big Up Yourself with Toronto rap veteran Kardinal Offishall in the music video. Roy also spend some time on tour this year. It’s safe to say Roy Woods was the most active signee in a very active OVO Sound.
PARTYNEXTDOOR – P3
Aside from Drake, PARTY was the first artist signed to OVO Sound. He released a self-titled project and it’s sequel since he’s been at OVO. This year he released the final piece of the PND trilogy. The second PND was considered his debut album, which makes P3 his second studio album. This year was the first year that PARTY decided to do a few video interviews while on tour. PARTY not only released an amazing album, but he was on VIEWS and he wrote Rihanna’s platinum single Work. The Sauga City musician is a pioneer in this era of modern R&B, and we’re excited to see what he has in store of 2017.
In conclusion, it’s been a very great year to be signed to OVO Sound. The full roster dropped projects and all artists had their time in the spotlight. The beauty about OVO is that every artist is from Toronto or the GTA and their career’s are really just kicking off. We wouldn’t be surprised to see one of these artists go platinum in the following years. All 6 projects from OVO Sound were very well done, and have songs in them that we’ll all be bumping in the New Year.
