Is Skepta’s New Owl Tattoo A Clever Way Of Hinting He’s Signed or Signing To OVO?

Drake and Skepta have had a history of recognizing each other in their music and always showing support for one another. Last year Drake showed respects to his UK brethren by tattooing BBK–Skepta’s label–on his shoulder. Skepta shared a photo of the 6 God’s new tat and gave it the caption: More than music. OVO BBK family for life.

A few months after this–around February 2016–Drake became the first Canadian signed to Skepta’s independent record label BBK. After speculation of it being a rumour or joke, in May 2016 Skepta confirmed that it was true. The UK artist told TimeOutWe’re putting together an official worldwide BBK label,’ he reveals, ‘but we haven’t talked about how it’ll work yet. It’ll be separate to his existing contracts. Trust me, I am not gonna sue Lil Wayne.’ Now although as DJ Booth points out this technically means Drake isn’t OFFICIALLY signed to BBK–it’s in the works, and the tattoo is like their unwritten contract.

Fast forward a few months and we’re at Caribana weekend, Skepta is performing in MTL for Osheaga, and stops by Toronto after for Drake’s OVO Fest. Now the Caribana and OVO Fest modness has come to an end, and the UK rapper takes to IG to share his new tattoo. He got it done in Toronto at FY INK Tattoos and it’s a tat of the OVO owl.

When Drake did this it only took Skepta a few months to “sign” him. Could this mean one of UK’s biggest grime artists will sign to OVO just as Drake did to BBK? Is the gesture of getting the tattoo of Drake’s label a subliminal way of announcing he’s signed to OVO?

There has been no official announcement, but we’ll keep you posted.
